Installments and intervals
Set how many payments a customer can choose and how far apart they fall.
All docs
Two settings decide the shape of a plan: how many payments it can be split into, and how often they are charged.
Number of installments
Max number of installments sets the most payments a customer can choose, from 1 to 15. On the product page the customer picks any number from 2 up to that maximum.
The count includes the down payment taken at checkout:
| Customer chooses | Paid at checkout | Charged later |
|---|---|---|
| 2 installments | 1 | 1 |
| 4 installments | 1 | 3 |
| 6 installments | 1 | 5 |
Fewer, larger payments finish sooner. More, smaller payments make a high price easier to say yes to. A maximum between 3 and 6 suits most big-ticket products.
Installment type
The Installment type is the gap between payments:
- Day: one day apart. Mainly useful for testing a plan end to end.
- Week: one week apart.
- Month: one month apart.
By default the first charge after checkout is one interval after the order: a monthly plan bought on 10 March charges next on 10 April, then 10 May. Weekly and monthly plans can instead charge on a fixed day. See Charge on a fixed day.
When charges run
Installments due on a day are charged in the morning, store by store. If an order has more than one payment plan item, they are charged together as one payment. You can see each plan's next charge date on the customer's plan in the app.
Changing the number of installments on an order
From a customer's plan in the app you can change its total number of installments while it's active, for example to give a customer longer to pay. It can't go below 2, below the number already paid, or above 15. The remaining balance is spread across the new number of payments.
